Usage Notes

Supplies are split between household items and one specialty purchase. Your student will need a small shovel or trowel, five clean plastic cups, distilled water, a spoon or stir stick, and a marker, all standard household finds. The pH testing kit with a color chart or test strips is the one item to source ahead of time from a garden center or online supplier. No heat or chemicals beyond the test strips are involved, making this a low-supervision experiment suitable for independent work once the materials are assembled.

Printing Tips

Heavier copy paper in the 24-28 lb range holds up better when students are writing outdoors or near damp soil samples. Loose sheets on a clipboard work well for yard-based data collection, then slide the completed sheet into a lab notebook once back inside. Laminating is not recommended here since the data table needs to be filled in with pen.
