
Hidden inside ordinary light is an entire rainbow, and making a homemade spectroscope is how your student finds it using a PVC pipe, two end caps, and a scratched-up DVD.
PVC pipe, a DVD fragment, and black construction paper are all it takes to split white light into a full visible spectrum. This lab sheet walks grades 5 through 8 homeschoolers through all seven build steps, from cutting the pipe to about 10 inches and carving a 1 mm slit in one end cap, to inserting the DVD diffraction grating shiny-side toward the slit, to sealing gaps with tape so stray light cannot contaminate the view. The included diagram labels the slit, diffraction grating, and eyepiece, giving your student a clear reference before assembly begins.
Once built, making a homemade spectroscope earns its place as a hands-on centerpiece in a light and optics unit study. Your homeschooler points the slit at sunlight, an incandescent bulb, an LED, a fluorescent tube, and a candle flame, then records what the spectrum looks like for each source in the observations section at the bottom of the sheet. Completing the lab demonstrates that different light sources produce visibly different spectral patterns, a concept that bridges into chemistry, astronomy, and electromagnetic radiation at the middle school level.


PVC pipe (1.5-inch diameter, roughly 10 inches long), two PVC end caps, one DVD, black construction paper or electrical tape, and glue or strong tape cover the full build. Every item on the materials list is a hardware store or household find, with no specialty science supplies required. The sheet notes handling the DVD only by its edges to protect the diffraction grating surface, which is the one fragile element in the whole project.

Standard 20 lb copy paper works, but 24 lb gives the observations section enough tooth to hold pencil notes without smearing during a darkened-room test session. Print as a loose sheet your student can keep beside the build area on a clipboard, then transfer completed notes to a lab notebook once the spectroscope is assembled.
