Simple and Compound Sentences Worksheet, Three Exercises

Label it, combine it, write your own: the simple and compound sentences worksheet packs three distinct exercises onto one clean page.

A color-coded reference box at the top defines both sentence types and lists the seven coordinating conjunctions, giving students something to look back at while they work. The layout moves from recognition to production, making it easy to assign as a full lesson or split across two short sessions.

Section one asks students to label six sentences as simple or compound, including examples with conjunctions like but, and, and so. Section two gives four sentence pairs and a conjunction in parentheses, prompting students to write one combined compound sentence each. Section three opens up with two write-your-own lines. The simple and compound sentences worksheet builds gradually, so it suits a first introduction or a quick review equally well.

Best Way to Use the Simple and Compound Sentences Worksheet

Usage Notes

Gel pens work well for the write-your-own section in Section 3, where the answer lines are long enough to write comfortably. Colored pencils can highlight the conjunctions in the reference box as a pre-activity warm-up. Use fine liners cautiously on the fill-in lines if the paper is thin, as heavy ink can bleed through.

Printing Tips

Regular copy paper is all this needs. If students will write directly on the sheet, bump to 24 lb paper so gel pen or marker answers do not ghost through to the back.
