Focused on animal behavior and bioluminescence, this lab sheet guides grades 3-6 homeschoolers through a 20 to 30 minute evening observation session. Students record the timing, number, brightness, and movement of firefly flashes in a structured observation table with columns for location, flash pattern, time between flashes, and a notes or sketch column for what they see in real time.

Nearly everything on the materials list is already in your home: a pencil, a watch or timer, and a lawn chair or blanket are all that is strictly required. The sheet lists a flashlight with red cellophane, bug spray, and a camera or smartphone as optional additions. One safety note the sheet makes explicit: students observe only, no catching fireflies.

A standard 20 lb sheet works fine if your student writes at a table before heading outside, but 32 lb paper holds up better on a clipboard in evening humidity. Slip the sheet into a clear plastic page protector for field use and your student can record directly on it with a dry-erase marker, then transfer notes indoors.
